Atmospheric Optical Turbulence Monitoring and Prediction

Guidestar’s atmospheric optical turbulence sensing technology remotely measures atmospheric turbulence strength.  Guidestar uses these measurements in combination with a proprietary model to estimate a number of localized weather parameters to support operational decision making.  In addition, Guidestar’s model can use weather forecast data to predict atmospheric optical turbulence.

Alkylated Deltamedral Boranes as Liphophilic Anions

To carry out reactions on either a laboratory or a commercial scale, reagents are often brought together by dissolving them in a liquid solution. It is well known that non-polar compounds require non-polar solvents, and ionic or highly polar compounds require polar solvents. Organic reagents usually are non-polar, so most organic reactions are done in non-polar organic solvents. Despite the preference for non-polar solvents, some organic reactions are facilitated by the presence of an ionic species. These reactions would benefit from a species with both an electric charge and solubility in organic solvents (lipophilicity). This invention is an anion whose dislocalized negative charge is encased in a nearly spherical sheath of organic groups such as CH3. The organic coating makes the anion liphphilic, and gives it low affinity for positively charged molecules and molecular regions. This invention is the chemical compound and a process for its synthesis. This would be useful to organic synthetic chemists in research and commercial companies. It could also be useful in photoresists, batteries, cleanup of radioactive waste or in polymerization processes. Co-dispersion of Switchable Plasmonic Nanoparticles for Renewable Energy (e.g. smart windows) and Electro-Optic Applications

Functionalized nanomaterials combined with state-of-the-art liquid crystal selectively filter out light spectra. Such composites can be used in a variety of applications, such as more efficient and cost effective smart glass. Smart windows are currently in the prototype stage development at CU and suffer negligible loss of transparency while blocking 95% of infrared light in the summer. This process is almost completely reversible to reduce heating costs in winter. Furthermore, the user-controlled features will offer many additional options, such as dimming, privacy and color changing modes. An adhesive film version of this technology is contemplated to reduce the cost of retrofitting. These composites can also be used to create more energy efficient electronic displays.
