Tuned cladding fiber amplifier and laser

AFRL has developed a multi-mode signal core used for single transverse mode fiber amplifier and laser operation.  The core is surrounded by cladding containing irregular microstructuring that causes loss in all of the core modes except the fundamental, while maintaining robust guiding of the fundamental mode.

Passive magneto-rheological vibration isolation apparatus

AFRL has developed a fixture that is isolated from the transmission of vibration emanating from a vibration source by a damper containing magneto-rheological ("MR") fluid and a plunger mechanically coupling the damper and the fixture. The isolation apparatus is mechanically coupled to the vibration source.

Supersonic all gas-phase iodine laser

AFRL has developed a continuous wave laser based on the electronic transition of atomic iodine at 1.315 microns from the NCl(a1Δ)+I(2P 3/2) energy transfer reaction using a transverse flow device having gas flow from an upstream subsonic combustor section through a converging-diverging supersonic slit nozzle to a downstream supersonic section and an intersecting optical resonator.

Method for reducing device and circuit sensitivity to electrical stress and radiation induced aging

In microelectronic circuits involving dielectric/ semiconductor interfaces having interstitial sites in the dielectric, AFRL has developed a method for hardening these interfaces by introducing a small atomic diameter inert gas into the interstitial sites.

Mid-infrared optically pumped unstable resonator laser

AFRL has developed a high-powered mid-IR antimonide-based unstable resonator semiconductor laser that is optically pumped. The waveguide is designed to weakly confine the transverse optical mode, and the optical pump stripe width can be varied to optimize the cavity width for high brightness operation.
